New Hope helps international student make his dream a reality

February 10, 2025

Life has always presented its share of challenges for Andreas Setiawan, an international student from Bandung, Indonesia. Growing up in the largest archipelago in the world—a nation of over 17,500 islands—Andreas was accustomed to thriving in a warm, humid climate. However, transitioning to life in the United States came with hurdles he never anticipated.

As an international student, Andreas faces significant financial barriers. Unlike domestic students, he is ineligible for government loans or financial aid. With living expenses and the cost of education in a foreign country weighing heavily on him, the path to achieving his dreams seems daunting. He recalls long days of juggling coursework with part-time work, trying to make ends meet while navigating cultural differences and homesickness.

Despite these struggles, Andreas is determined to pursue his passion for helping others by studying nursing at DMACC in Carroll. His goal is clear: to combine his rich international experiences with a meaningful career in healthcare. However, the reality of mounting expenses threatens to derail his aspirations.

That’s why New Hope stepped in. The organization not only offers him employment in a field completely new to him but also a dorm room at reduced cost and a scholarship for school. The scholarship allows Andreas to cover his living expenses in part and focus fully on his studies. This opportunity marked a turning point in his journey, offering him hope and the resources he needed to continue his education.

Now living at Hope Hall, Andreas reflects on how far he has come. Before arriving in the United States, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Tourism Management and worked at prestigious hotels in Germany and Australia, gaining valuable insights into diverse cultures. These experiences shaped his resilience and adaptability, qualities that have helped him navigate life’s challenges.

In his free time, Andreas enjoys biking, a hobby that keeps him grounded and healthy amidst a demanding nursing program. He remains committed to his belief that struggles, no matter where they occur, can be overcome with passion and focus. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” he says, a mantra that has guided him through the toughest of times.

Andreas credits New Hope with transforming his life. The organization not only provided financial relief but also gave him the chance to serve others in a meaningful way, Enriching Lives. Today, he stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of support, striving every day to make his dreams a reality.
